2007 Honda Civic Review: Expensive Car With Engine Issues And A Short Life Expectancy

2007 is a bad year for the Civic with cracking engine blocks, and a short lifespan of 200,000 miles. At $4,842 - $10,148, it's not worth risking the money on costly failures.

VehicleHistory Image

Performance is good, the cabin has a lot of room, and regular maintenance costs are low.

Problems with the engine are still very common, there's a lot of road noise, and no luxury features.

2007 Honda Civic: Key Points

  • Reliability ratings are poor, with serious engine problems including cracked blocks. Avoid 2006 through 2009 Civics, and go with a 2010 or newer.
  • The base engine has good efficiency, and there's a more powerful version in the Si.
  • Fuel economy is great, at up to 30 MPG.
  • Safety ratings are okay, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • We don't recommend the 2007 Honda Civic, ranking 8th out of 25 compact cars based on owner reviews. The 2007 model still has significant mechanical problems, making it one to avoid.

Positive Owner Reviews

It is very dependable and gets great gas mileage. I will buy another if I ever wear this one out.

This car is the best one I have ever owned. I haven't had any problems with it and it gets great gas mileage.I would not hesitate to buy another'

There are no issues that I have with my car it is very comfortable and it has very nice A/C in it and it is very durable.

That it is very durable and cheap and it is very useful for traveling long distances and its fuel efficient.

It is dependable, a good investment.

No real problems with this vehicle, and we got it second-hand! Reliable and easy to maintain, the only real problem we have had is that one of the factory speakers blew out, but that is probably because we listen to our music loud <3.

Great, reliable car at a reasonable price!

Great, reliable car! I have had a Civic ever since I learned how to drive 20 years ago! I'll continue to own one and would be comfortable with my children driving one someday.

I drive a Honda Civic Hybrid. I like the size as it is compact but it has just enough room for me (I am short, only 5ft, 1inch). I love the Hybrid because it is economical. One thing I dislike is the windshield is very large and slants over the front seats, making it difficult to cool down in the summer months. The car also seems to have issues defrosting, and the windows are hard to clear in the winter months, but that may be due to age of the vehicle. I've only had it for just over a year.

My Honda Civic is a Hybrid and gets awesome gas mileage!

One of my most comfy cars, with minimal problems.

The tan car has really a nice interior. It is needed replacement speakers over time, as they blew out due to use and sometimes the doors get stuck. It is big, but comfy and it's been in my household for a long time.

I love the durability. The car has 260k miles and counting! I dislike the small size at times. Road noise is also loud in the car.

The car will run MANY MILES without much maintenance. Get it as a low cost commuter car.

Gas last along time even when your on e. Easy controlling. Last on the road.

I really like the make of the car. I believe it sits a little to low to the ground. It is great on gas. They last along time.

Negative Owner Reviews

That is it is runs smoothly.

My car is to small it does not have enough space when the air conditioner turns on it does not get as cold as it should it runs pretty smooth.

That Honda does not care if their cars don't compare with other car models.

I am disgusted with my Honda. The paint peeled from a defect in the paint they used. The radio, CD player does not work anymore and makes loud noises while i'm driving.

Beware of engine block issue on 2006-2009 models

Was a good reliable car until the engine block developed a crack. Now it is a total loss. These problems surfaced years ago and Honda has a TSB that extended the warranty on the engine block to 10 years from the date of manufacture. I have 140K miles on this car that I expected to last well beyond this mark. This will be my last Honda since now it is just an expensive door stop.

Honda Canada should take responsibility

Be warned. Car ran fine until it developed a crack in the engine block. MFG head office refused to take responsibility. I am stuck with a lemon now. Replacing the engine costs $2500-3000).

Highly reliable with care.

Paint defectiveness for the year. Rides rough, could be due to Usage due to prior owners not taking care of it (I purchased it use). Comfortable to the model. Reliable for the model.

It runs good n it is a gas saver.

Nothing I would like a new car it is not dependable it runs smooth but it could use some major updates.

It has great mileage, so it is good on long trips.

I like that it has good mileage and is also fuel efficient. I dislike it because the transmission is bad. Also the car was not clean and well maintained when I first purchased it.

Poor mileage for a hybrid. Otherwise, comfortable car. Would not buy another Honda.

Top Critic Reviews

  • Consumer Reports found the Civic to be nimble with road noise, and has lower than average owner satisfaction ratings.
  • Edmunds rates the Civic at 4.5 out of 5 with wonderful comfort and safety, however there are some bad design choices.
  • Kelley Blue Book gives the Civic a 4.5 out of 5 with a high resale value, but there is a low quality interior.

What Problems Does the 2007 Honda Civic Have?

The Honda Civic has some serious problems including engine failures, tires that wear out fast, and paint issues. Major engine improvements show up for the 2010 model year, making the extra $1,000 well worth the cost.

Cracked engine blocks are a widespread and costly problem happening at about 84,000 miles. Civics from 2006 through 2009 have engine defects causing failures at record numbers, so Honda issued an 8 year warranty. A replacement costs around $3,000.

Excessive and uneven tire wear is another common complaint every 50,000 miles. Tires wear out fast because of a rear suspension issue, and there's a class action suit. If your car is outside the settlement timeframe, then replacing the suspension components costs about $500.

Peeling and cracking paint is another frequent issue on cars with 70,000 miles. The paint is a weak spot and fails when exposed to excessive sunlight. Repainting the affected panels fixes the problem, costing about $1,000 per panel.

There are 9 recalls, only somewhat more than other compact cars from 2007. The recalls include a rear wheel speed sensor, steering column, fuel tank, thermal insulator, and several for air bags. Most serious is the speed sensor, since a failure can cause the wheel to fall off.

How Much is the 2007 Honda Civic Worth?

Blue book values range from $4,842 - $10,148, making the Civic more expensive than other compact cars, including the Sentra and Cobalt. When new, the price range was $14,810 to $24,590. Depreciation is average, losing around 12% of its current value per year.

How Long Will the 2007 Honda Civic Last?

A well cared for Civic will last around 200,000 miles, this is 100,000 miles less than a Corolla or Yaris. The regular annual maintenance costs are affordable for a compact car at $320 per year, according to Repair Pal.

As a 2007 Civic ages and reaches over 100,000 miles, there are some maintenance items owners should prepare to address. They include alternators for $600, tie rods costing $150, and brake master cylinders which cost around $400.

None, no problems. It has been one of the best cars I have ever bought. It is very dependable, reliable.

All sorts of problems. It has issues with window operating with the buttons not working. The water system, ie. Coolant does not operate well, and needs to be filled excessively throughout the week and month before prior use.

For the most part it is very reliable. It is gets me where I need to go. It had a transmission problem but now that is fixed. Other than that just maintenance.

There is no problems, it is forever my favorite car and my family loves everything about it. No problems at all.

Yes it is very reliable. I have had few issues that have not been caused by external sources or just time wear on the car.

There has never been an issue mechanically, despite me not being the best owner in terms of taking car off its maintenance.

Very reliable, few repair were ever done to this car. It has never broke down. Reliably passes state inspection.

It is very reliable. The only problems are cosmetic due to someone running into the side of the vehicle.

What Are the Models & Specs?

DX is the entry-level model with:

  • Cloth Seating
  • Power Windows

LX is a step up, adding features including:

  • Folding Rear Seat

Si is a sport-focused model with:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • More Powerful 4-Cylinder Engine
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Sport Suspension

What Technology & Safety Features Are Included?

Technology found in the 2006 Honda Civic is very basic for a compact car, and the DX model doesn't even have a stereo.

  • Standard technology in the LX model includes an AM/FM/CD stereo system with 3.5mm AUX jack and 4 speakers.
  • Optional upgrades for the EX model include satellite radio, a 7-inch navigation system, and a premium 6-speaker stereo system.

What Engine Options are Available?

The entry-level Honda Civic models have average performance for a compact car. Upgrading to the Si model gets you some excellent performance, only taking 6.5 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour.

  • The base motor offers reasonable power from the 1.8L 4-cylinder engine with 140 horsepower.
  • A larger 0L 4-cylinder is in the Si model with 197 horsepower.

What Color Options are Available?

Black

How Big is the Civic?

The 2007 Honda Civic is a compact car available as a coupe or sedan, similar in size to the Jetta and Focus. Adults fit easily in the back seats of the sedan with a lot of legroom, but the coupe is cramped. Three suitcases fit in the 12 cubic feet of room in the trunk.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the 2007 Honda Civic Compare to Other Cars?

One of the highest-rated competitors is the more expensive Toyota Corolla. The Corolla stands out with considerably better reliability, but the Civic is sportier and more responsive. For the 2007 model, the Corolla is a better choice, and the Civic is more reliable for 2010 and newer.

Another rival is the more affordable Nissan Sentra. The Sentra has better technology, but the Civic is more comfortable. For the 2007 model year the Sentra and Civic are both bad choices, with a lot of mechanical problems.

Ranks #8 Small Cars by Owners

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Honda Civic a Good Car?

No, the Civic gets an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 based on 472 verified owner reviews, having too many reported engine problems.

Some downsides include engines cracking abruptly, and technology that is difficult to use. Where the Civic stands out is with low ownership costs and good performance figures.

Overall, 2007 is a year buyers should avoid. Engine improvements show up for the 2010 model year and the price difference of only $1,000 is worth the cost.

Yes, very dependable. Has been a great car for me. I have not had any major issues with this car, in all these years.

Yes, it is. It is quite a good vehicle to both drive and own. It operates well. I enjoy riding it. I enjoy commuting with it day by day.

Yes, it is very good on gas. It has high miles yet is still chugging. We have run into a few problems, but they have been fixed and the car is now better than ever.

Yes, it is the best. Safe and saves and works for a long time. I love interior and exterior and it is easy to drive.

Yes, it is reliable and gets great gas mileage. I am a college kid right now and that is really important to me. It is kind of small though so I cannot carpool.

Yes, it is not fancy but very reliable and affordable without being awful to look at. It is a bit small if you regularly have more than 2 adults in the vehicle but it is fine with kids.

Yes, it is a great vehicle. Very dependable and very few repair issues. Good in the snow too. I would gladly get another civic.

Yes, it is a great vehicle. It is very dependable and resistant vehicle. I have not had any problems with the vehicle.

It's not flashy, but it's in good condition (except for some repairs that I'm saving for) and goes from point A to B.

The best thing about the car is it's size, gas, and the inside is amazing!

The inside of the car is amazing! Touch screen, Bluetooth, AUX, and iPod connector. Very spacious and does great on gas. It even comes with the 'eco' feature The car is also very economical and inexpensive. It will get filled with about $40-$50 of gas. Another thing I love about this car is that it is very updated for an older car. The lights on the dashboard and Bluetooth are my favorite things about the car. It is a very reliable car and I would always say that I never wanted a Honda but now I do not plan on getting rid of my car

Nice car! Good mpg. Smooth ride.

I have only owned the car for a month. It's a 07 Honda Civic. 82000 miles. Feels and looks new drives like new except slight vibration which I believe is motor mounts. I am like the leg room and I am tall. It has above average power for a 4 cylinder. I am getting around 35 miles per gallon average mostly highway miles though. Before this car I drove a 07 Ford Fusion -same year- this Honda Civic is way nicer. I say go for the purchase if you like the car.

The k20z3 is a very reliable engine, good for daily use and for easy modification. The car meets all qualifications for a great car; reliable, fun, comfortable, safe and fuel efficient. The car works fine- pretty reliable when it comes to gas mileage. I am actually pretty happy price wise with how the car handles gas. It has kept up over the years so that is nice. There is just nothing new about it. The car has no excitement or pizzazz to it. Other people can name their cars because there is so much personality tot hem and mine is simple drab. Plain interior with an off white outside. The windows stick a little bit and the steering wheel is a little stiff to turn but besides that the car is reliable and works for what I need.

Performance is okay, however it is starting to fall apart. A/c is broken, the headliner is falling off, the auto locks no longer work. 2007 Honda Civic Recall Pros & Cons

PROS: I love my little car. Probably because it was my first and has been my only car. It is now over 10 years later and I still drive it everyday over 30 miles a day to and from work with no issues other than normal maintenance. CONS: I got my car the first year they changed the entire body of the civics. That being said, we came to find out that A LOT of things on my year and model had been factory recalled. This in itself was a hassle and inconvenience. I was constantly having to take it back to the dealer to have something fixed. From the sun visors, to the back tires, to the actual engine block. It seemed like every time I turned around something else was wrong with it. The only good thing about this was that it was RECALLED and came at no cost to me. Just the inconvenience of not having my car (and not being able to get a rental since I was too young at the time). All in all I'd say that my car is definitely something to be proud of. Reliable, fast (or fast enough for me at least), dependable (now that all the recalls were addressed), and purring like a cat.

Mostly reliable but there are some problems. Water leaks through doors as car ages can run into cabin onto floor of car causing mold in carpet. Starter failed after12 years, used mostly for hiway driving. (I've owned 2 other civics keeping them till they die. I've never had to replace a starter) Airconditioning is just adequate for the car but could be up-sized for more capacity with extra occupants. A/c clutch electrical relay failed. A/c clutch wear. Was able to re-shim once. Will have to replace compressor or clutch assembly soon. Like many cars, the clear plastic covering the headlights is terrible over time.

Great car. Compact. Small. Reliable.

I have two basic problems with my car. I am not sure if it is because it was previously owned or if it is just the car. For one, the air/heat does not always come on when you turn it on, no matter how many times you turn the knob. For two, the air does not get cold, or even cool, when the car is idling (even after it has been driven for at least 10 minutes). I love the comfort of my car. The seats are plush and comfortable to ride in for longer periods of time. The car is very small and low to the ground so it shakes really bad when in a certain range of 18 wheelers. Overall, the car has great performance and cheap to fix minor issues.

It is reliable and has good gas mileage. Anything more specific would depend on who they are - I would tell a prospective buyer how cheap it is for maintenance and gas, but I'd tell friends how there is actually more room in the backseat than it looks like.

I like how reliable it is. It's run with regularity for over a decade. It's also a good size, so easy to park and drive in cities. It's also good on gas. I don't like how it only has two doors though.
